Elaine Huck sent the final report of her season as the bait shop at Calcasieu Point will close Sunday until spring, while
the ramp there will be open all winter.
She said fishing has been excellent if you could tolerate the cold mornings. Multiple limits of trout, reds and flounder were
caught plus some of the largest sheepshead ever.
Turners Bay and Commissary Point have been hot spots with both soft plastics as well as live bait.
Actually most all areas of Big Lake have had birds, especially the main lake areas and especially large numbers of trout under
them.
Most of the flounder fishermen are
keeping their information under their hats, but the word is that there
have been a lot
of boats fishing the ship channel around the poggie plants in
Cameron. They might just like the aroma or they might be catching
fish.
We are going to make an attempt each week to have more info from both the Calcasieu as well as Sabine rivers.
Tournament angler Doug Guins reported he went out on the Calcasieu River last Thursday afternoon and found water temperatures
to be in the low to mid 60s.
At the Westfork, water conditions were very clear and the lower main river is clear to slightly stained. Guins said fish are
concentrated on points and around drains and cuts. He caught fish on Stanley Compact spinnerbaits and small shallow diving
crankbaits in shad patterns.
He also worked Stanley jigs in black and blue and Texas-rigged Bass Kandi Speed Bugs and Trick Worms. He added that these
patterns should remain pretty constant as long as stable weather continues and water conditions do not change.
Guins said the bite will get better before the next weather front passes in a few days.
This is a great time of year to fish the river with minimal boat traffic and less fishing pressure.
Guins was also excited to see a pair of bald eagles on the Calcasieu River last week. He mentioned that there are numerous
ospreys, but said those were the first bald eagles he had seen.
The Sabine River is about to become widely known, which could be a good thing for local businesses, or not so good if you
are a regular angler who enjoys fishing with little pressure on a very productive tidal fishery.
A few weeks ago B.A.S.S. announced that the BASS Elite Tournament Series will take place on the Sabine River in March. Already
there are Elite pros pre-fishing these and adjoining waters.
We got some fishing info about the Sabine from both Josh Lowry and Guins.
There were reports from south of Interstate 10 and they are catching a few bass on crankbaits and DOA shrimp. In addition, they are also catching red
fish, speckled trout and flounder while bass fis
Square bill crankbaits were productive as well as jigs and spinnerbaits with water conditions mostly stained.
