Fishing Report: Fall patterns set in on Calcasieu River

By By Joe Joslin / American Press

Water temperatures are trending cooler and running upper 70s to low 80s with water conditions mostly stained. Local tournament angler Doug Guins says the bass are feeding heavily as the fall patterns set in.

Guins reported Stanley’s Compact

spinnerbait and square bill crankbaits have been two very successful

tools the past couple

of weeks. Bass have been holding tight to cover and bumping the

spinnerbait and crankbaits into cypress knees, lay downs and

tree bases have been triggering some solid, vicious strikes.

He also said they have been catching fish on Texas-rigged craws and a Stanley flipping jig.

Sabine River

The Sabine has been producing good

numbers of fish on crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Guins reported the river

has had quite

a bit of current in it which has positioned bass tight on cover as

well as in slack water out of the current just behind the

Martin honored

According to BoatUS, Berkley, the leading manufacturer of fishing line, has recycled enough fishing line to reach the moon

and back 19 times.

This is from their website (

“Recycling used fishing line seems easy enough. Build some recycling line containers or bins, install them at the water’s

edge and teach anglers to put the used line safely inside. Since 2008, the BoatUS Foundation has helped install over 2,000

line-recycling bins at docks, ramps and boat clubs.”

They state that “none of this would be

possible without a dedicated partner in the fishing industry, which is

committed to

collect all of the line and ensure it’s recycled. This partner is

Berkley Conservation Institute’s Jim Martin. Since 1990,

Berkley has recycled nine million miles of fishing line — enough

to reach the moon and back 19 times. For his hard work, dedication

and expertise, Martin, Conservation Director with the Berkley

Conservation Institute, was honored with the 2013 BoatUS Foundation

Environmental Leadership Award.”
