Students at F.K. White Middle were evacuated on Monday after a student brought a dismantled radio with wires to school.

Calcasieu Parish School Board Public

Information Officer Kirby Smith said the incident occurred around 2:30

p.m. and the all-clear

was give by 3:30 p.m.

Smith said the student showed the radio to other students, who told school administrators.

“The school resource officer confiscated the device and called in the Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office called in

the bomb squad,” she said.

The bomb squad secured the contraband.

“It wasn’t a bomb. It didn’t look like a bomb, but everyone took the proper safety precautions to remove the device and make

sure everything was OK,” Smith said.

Students were evacuated from the campus to the McNeese State University football stadium.

Parents were alerted via-school messenger alert, which sends out phone calls that pickup would take place at the stadium.

Students who ride the bus were also delayed in arrival to their homes. The stadium was clear by 4:15 p.m.

“Parents cooperated wonderfully with

the adjusted pickup routine,” Smith said. “Students, teachers and staff

at FK White followed

procedures almost perfectly.”
