F.K. White Middle School will host its first student art sale this week, offering more than 100 pieces of pottery, paintings and drawings.

The sale will be 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the school library; another showing will be 4:30-6 p.m. Monday. Prices will range from $3 to $10, and proceeds will pay for an upcoming field trip for the art students.

The students, under the direction of art teachers Jessica Woolmington and Heidi Benoit, worked on the pieces during the school year and developed their craft. The items for sale are their best works, Benoit said.

“At the beginning of the year, their form wasn’t so good,” she said. “But we have some really nice pieces to present now that the school year is complete.”

Woolmington said the idea for the sale came about after suggestions from visitors, who noted the quality of the students’ work. Once she told her students about the sale, she said they were eager to participate.

Benoit agreed, saying her students were more engaged in their lessons because they were “pumped to profit from their work, instead of just taking it home.”

Woolmington said her class understood the realities of being a working artist after they saw someone buy one of her personal pieces of artwork.

“You never know what’s going to hit big,” she said. “I think it’s really important for students to see that.”
