EUNICE (AP) — A Eunice man has been arrested for stealing copper wire out of a burned house.
Police say 57-year-old Curley Pitre, Sr. was arrested Monday for looting, which is punishable by more than 15 years in prison
or a $10,000 fine.
The Advertiser reported the house was heavily damaged by a fire early Christmas Eve and the
property
was cordoned off with yellow tape to keep trespassers away. Police
say a neighbor called later that day to say someone had
ignored the barricade and went into the house. When an officer
arrived, they found Pitre with wire cutters in hand and several
bundles of copper wire.
During questioning, police say Pitre admitted stripping wire from the house to sell.
