Eight Lake Area prep volleyball teams make playoffs
By By Warren Arceneaux / American Press
Eight area teams qualified for the volleyball playoffs, and each one of them will get to play at home in their first game.
Barbe, St. Louis and Iota earned top eight seeds, meaning they will get byes in the bi-district round, then host a game in
the regional round.
Five other teams — Leesville, Sam Houston, Westlake, DeQuincy and Iowa, earned seeds between 9 and 16, allowing them to stay
at home for bi-district games.
Barbe is the sixth seed in Division I and will host the winner of the No. 22 Ponchatoula-No. 11 Covington game in the regional
round.
In Division II, Sam Houston is the No. 13 seed and will host No. 20 Academy of Our Lady of Marrero. No. 16 Leesville will
host No. 17 Tara.
St. Louis is the No. 5 seed in Division
III and will host the winner of the No. 21 West Feliciana-No. 12
Cecilia game. Westlake
is the No. 16 seed and will host No. 17 Evangel at 5 p.m.
Thursday. Iowa is the No. 13 seed and will host No. 20 Xavier Prep.
DeQuincy is the No. 15 seed and will host No. 18 North Vermilion.
The Rams earned the final home game.
“That was pretty important, we are
going to be playing someone comparable to us,” said Westlake head coach
Gloria Fontenot.
“It has been a rebuilding year for us, we only have two girls back
that started last year. We are playing a lot of freshmen
and sophomores, so this is all new. But it is important for them
to get this experience for the next few years.”
St. Louis, Iowa, Westlake and DeQuincy all qualified from District 2-3A. Fontenot said being in a tough district is a good
thing.
“It has helped us quite a bit,” she said. “Evangel has mostly only played district games. Hopefully it has been to our advantage to have seen different teams and different styles.”
Iota is the sixth seed in Division IV and will host the No. 22 St. Mary’s-No. 11 Sacred Heart of New Orleans winner.
Bi-district games must be played by Wednesday. Regional round games will be played by Nov. 5. The quarterfinal, semifinal and championship rounds will be played at the state tournament Nov. 8-10 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
