A DeRidder man has been charged with second-degree murder after confessing to strangling his girlfriend, authorities said.

Jeremy A. Bunch Sr., 40, was taken into custody Sunday night at the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s office in connection with

the death of his girlfriend, 40-year-old Mandy Kirl of DeRidder.

Bunch allegedly killed Kirl early Wednesday morning and fled to Texas.

“While in Texas someone had convinced him it was in his best interest to turn himself in, so he went to the nearest sheriff’s

office, which just happened to be in Shreveport,” said BPSO spokesman Joe Toler.

Bunch told Caddo Parish Sheriff’s

officials on Saturday “that something bad had happened” at a home on

U.S. 190, west of DeRidder,

Toler said.

When BPSO officers and detectives arrived at the rental home, they discovered Kirl’s body.

Toler said it was an argument that escalated and “got out of control.” Police also responded to the residence in January for

“a similar issue,” Toler said.

However, Toler said he was unsure if any charges were brought against Bunch in January or if he had been arrested for that

incident.

While preliminary reports are indicating strangulation, Kirl’s body was transported to the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office

for examination.

Bunch is originally from Los Angeles, Calif., and transferred to DeRidder for work.
