A murder in DeRidder over the weekend was the city’s first since February 2011.

A Georgia man was killed in the early morning hours of Saturday, authorities said.

Chaddrick Mayes, 30, shot 43-year-old

David Palmer III in the head at a gathering on Tara Drive, said Lt.

Craig Richard, DeRidder

Police Department spokesman.

Palmer was in DeRidder for wedding and retirement parties, Richard said.

He said the altercation began with a verbal argument between Mayes and Palmer and ended with Mayes shooting Palmer once in

the head.

The two men did not know each other, Richard said.

Mayes was arrested, along with brother Antonio Mayes 27, in Newton County, Texas.

Chaddrick Mayes is charged with second-degree murder and Antonio Mayes is charged with accessory.

Both have bond set at $1 million and are awaiting extradition, Richard said.

Richard said the DeRidder Police Department was assisted by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office forensic unit, the Beauregard

Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
