Iowa man facing murder charge in connection with bar fight

By Special to the American Press

An Iowa man alleged to have been in a bar fight that left a DeQuincy man dead now faces a charge of second-degree murder.

The charge against Austin James Soileau, 19, 7590 Sidney Leger Road, was upgraded from second-degree battery and his bond set at $1.5 million, Deputy Chief Mark Kraus, police spokesman, said Monday in a news release.

Chad Babineaux, 30, was listed in critical condition following the Saturday incident, then declared brain dead Sunday, Kraus said previously.

Babineaux died Sunday in a local hospital, according to his obit.

Babineaux was an employee of On the Rocks, the E. McNeese Street bar where the fight took place, Kraus.

He was unresponsive on the floor when officers arrived, Kraus said.

Investigators believe Babineaux was attempting to break up a fight between several people when he was struck, Kraus said.

Kraus said anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police at 491-1311 or Crime Stoppers at 439-2222.
