Cowboys tweak lineup for Arkansas-Pine Bluff series

It only took one series for Terry Burrows to make his first lineup tweak of the season.

The McNeese State coach is shaking up his pitching rotation for this weekend’s series with Arkansas-Pine Bluff after the Cowboys were swept by Towson last week.

“We only had one good start on the weekend,” Burrows said. “We need to get good starts from our pitchers.”

There are two starters from last week’s rotation in the mix — they’ll just be throwing on different days.

Freshman Bryce Kinglsey is scheduled to go today, while Blake Ware was switched to Saturday. The newcomer in the mix is Sam Peterson, who did well enough in relief against Towson to get the nod.

“My job between now and the beginning of conference is to find three starters,” Burrows said. “We’re going to flip-flop things around until then to get a pretty good idea of how guys are going to react during games.”

There won’t be wholesale changes to the batting order, other than Skylar Barrentine hitting leadoff in place of Andrew Guillotte.

“I want to see Andrew Guillotte learn to be a leadoff hitter, but right now we’ve got to win some games,” Burrows said. “At some point we may mix it up and get him in the leadoff spot in midweek games, but right now Skylar will lead off.”

The Lions (2-4) come into the series after getting swept by Oklahoma in a Wednesday doubleheader. UAPB took two of three from Summit League-favorite North Dakota State last weekend.

“There’s nobody you can let your guard down for,” Burrows said. “We’re going to have our hands full. They’re obviously pitching it well and have some guys in the lineup that can swing it well. We just have to play good baseball all the way around.”””msu-logo-11-27-13
