City police to investigate shooting of dog by officer

By From staff reports

A carjacking and foot chase incident on Monday resulted in three arrests, injuries to the carjacking victim and the shooting

death of a Lake Charles resident’s dog.

Lake Charles police said the incident began at about 5 p.m., when three males beat a man in the parking lot near the Cinemark

movie theater, took his keys and drove away in the victim’s car. They went as far as the Capital One Bank on the corner of

Ryan Street and Prien Lake Road. They parked the car on the north side of the property near Fiske Street.

The police news release said officers saw the three flee the parked vehicle by jumping fences through back yards. The officers

gave chase.

During the pursuit, one of the

carjackers ran through the back yard at 3204 Hodges St. and left the

gate open which led to

the front yard. The dog belonging to the residents there ran

through the open gate and chased the suspect. The dog’s attention

was diverted to a pursuing police officer and it began running

toward him.

The officer, believing he was being attacked by the dog, shot it. The dog died shortly afterward.

Other pursuing officers caught the three they were chasing — Donnie Leonard, 19, of 140 Reggie Road in Duson and two juveniles.

They each face charges of carjacking, simple robbery and resisting arrest.

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said Tuesday that the carjacking victim was treated and released at a local hospital.

The news release said there will be a police internal investigation into the shooting of the dog, named Monkey, who was owned

by Chris Crochet.
