Saints prove holiday poem fit for a season

With my apologies to Clement Clarke Moore:

’Twas the day before Christmas, when all through the Dome,

Saints fans were crying for the playoffs will not be at home.

Weeks before, their stockings had been hung with room for more bling,

But playing on the road will make it tough to win a second ring.

The players were nestled all snug with their dreams,

But after losing 3 of 4 they awoke to their own nightmares and screams.

When up on the schedule the Saints saw with delight,

A break here and there could leave Dallas in their playoff sight.

That would require the Cowboys to knock off Philly,

After watching Dallas play this year, thinking that would be silly.

Yet if they can find a way to pull that game out,

A second battle with the Saints would be the likely next bout.

Away these Saints would travel for that playoff game,

They have pounded the ‘Boys once and could expect more of the same.

So fans can find hope if playing the right postseason trash,

Sean Payton’s offense could again be counted to score in a flash.

So on Brees, on Graham on Colston and Lance Moore,

I’d call out the defense, but I can’t name you four.

This team is built on offense no matter what says Rob Ryan,

To claim his defense will lead them would only be lyin’.

For this is still a team that loves to score fast,

It just hasn’t been able of late to score last.

That has left the Saints playing for the final playoff spot,

But a division can still be won as this week’s subplot.

There is also hope still of winning and getting a bye,

Hard to believe but that isn’t a lie.

For that to happen next weekend the Falcons must win,

Praying for such help isn’t really a sin.

Now comes the hard part for you to follow,

And this fact of the story might be hard to swallow.

The Super Bowl for the Saints is just three wins away,

Making it hard to believe they can get back in the fray.

Yet Coach Payton believes in all of his men,

Except that kicker he just sent back to his den.

He missed too many of his latest kicks,

Then Payton pulled out more of his tricks.

Another onside boot got him the ball and 3 points,

But when the Panthers scored with seconds left fans were left out of their joints.

Ryan’s boys had done it again, blown a late lead,

That is not the actions of the NFC’s No. 2 seed.

But a new year might bring hope of a second chance,

Which would leave owner Tom Benson doing his prance.

I heard Payton say just before Christmas Day,

Don’t count my Saints out or we just might make you pay.
