OBERLIN — Allen Parish School Board members are eyeing a bond issue to provide funds to upgrade Reeves High School.

During this week’s regular meeting, the board discussed the possibility of asking voters in School District 3 in the Reeves area to approve a $2.5 million or $3 million bond issue to improve the school campus.

“When you look at what the other schools in the parish have, this would be putting Reeves High School in the same physical status,” Superintendent Michael Doucet said. “It would also help with the pride and character of the school.”

The aging facility is in need of repairs and renovations, as well as upgrades to include technology, he said. Nearly 400 students attend the rural K-12 school.

School officials are meeting with the community to discuss the possibility of placing the bond issue on the Dec. 6 ballot. Board members hope to finalize plans for the election by their Sept. 8 meeting.

The bonds would be repaid with a yet-to-be-determined millage, Doucet said. The amount of the millage will depend on the sale of the bonds.

All Allen Parish schools, with the exception of Reeves High, have undergone major expansions and renovations in recent years, with all communities successful in passing bond issues to fund the projects, according to Board President Carolyn Manuel.

Bond projects are being completed in Oakdale and Oberlin, she said.(MGNonline)
