Authorities: Moss Bluff man ran fundraiser scam (with arrest reports)

By Special to the American Press

A 44-year-old Moss Bluff man has been charged with theft after allegedly running a scam for a fundraiser dinner, authorities

said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office

spokeswoman Kim Myers said Michael L. Derrick, 362 Calcasieu Ave., was

arrested Tuesday

after detectives discovered that he sold more than 75 tickets for

dinners for a benefit event that did not exist. Myers said

Derrick collected approximately $800 from five local businesses.

“An employee of a local business said

Derrick solicited money for lunches he was selling to benefit a local

cancer patient,”

Myers said Thursday in a news release. “Several employees of the

business purchased lunches that Derrick said were being prepared

by a local restaurant. They were also given a receipt and a date

in which the lunches would be delivered to the business.

“An employee of the business called the local restaurant to order more lunches and was advised they were not hosting any benefit

event.”

Myers said the Sheriff’s Office believes there may be more people who are victims of this scam. Anyone that has been scammed

in this way is asked to contact CPSO at 491-3605.
