A trio of area high school athletes took the next step in their careers Wednesday by signing national letters of intent to
play at the collegiate level.
Sam Houston had a pair of signees as softball pitcher Baylee Corbello signed with LSU and baseball first baseman/pitcher Kameron
Esthay signed with Baylor. Sulphur shortstop Brooks Morse signed with Southeastern Louisiana.
Corbello is the reigning Miss Softball
and has led the Broncos to two consecutive state championships and three
title game
appearances. Corbello was 23-4 with a 0.86 earned run average and
337 strikeouts in 179 innings last week. At the plate, she
hit .496 with three home runs and 39 RBIs. One of the homers came
in the championship game, a 2-1, extra-innings win over
Hahnville.
In three years Corbello is 14-1 in playoff games. The Broncos won the Class 4A championship in 2011 and the 5A championship
game this year.
“I am really excited. I grew up always loving LSU and always wanted to go,” Corbello said. “It is great to be able to compete
at the Division I level.”
Esthay led the Broncos to a 23-9 record, hitting .320 with three home runs and 20 RBIs. He was 8-0 with a 1.16 ERA and 52
strikeouts in 54 innings pitched.
He chose Baylor over Tulane, McNeese and Nicholls State.
“I liked everything about the school,
the baseball program, the education — everything,” Esthay said. “I am
excited about
being able to play at the next level. The process was
nerve-racking, Getting it over will make my senior season a lot easier.
Now I just want to play some baseball, hit some home runs and win a
state championship.”
Morse hit .274 last year, with a .458 on base percentage, 30 walks, 20 runs scored, nine RBIs and 17 stolen bases.
“He has been starting since he was a
freshman and is a good kid,” said Tors head coach Jason Trahan. “He
comes to the park
every day happy to practice, he loves the game of baseball and is
always wanting to do extra work after practice. He has done
a wonderful job for us. His glove is his strength and he has a
good arm for a small guy.”
