ANGOLA (AP) — Authorities say an inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola allegedly attacked a female correctional officer with a metal serving pan.

The state Department of Corrections said in a news release received by The Advocate that Warner Wiley hit the officer in the face and head with the metal pan around 5 p.m. Monday.

The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Warden Burl Cain said investigators have not yet determined what caused the attack.

Cain says another inmate helped save the officer’s life by getting the attention of other officers during the attack.

Cain says Wiley has been at Angola since 1986 and is serving a life sentence for a first-degree murder conviction in Franklin Parish.
