PONCHATOULA (AP) — A junior high student in Ponchatoula has been arrested after bringing a loaded .38-caliber handgun and knife to school.
Police Chief Bry said the incident happened Friday at Ponchatoula Jr. High School after school officials notified police that someone had weapons on campus.
WDSU-TV reported the 14-year-old student was arrested and taken to the Florida Parish Juvenile Detention Center. Layrisson says the teenager was booked with two counts of carrying a firearm or weapon on school grounds.
Layrisson says investigators are still trying to determine where he got the gun and knife, which were seized after the student's arrest.
Layrisson says it appears the student brought the weapon in fear of his safety at an after-school event he was planning to attend.
