Calcasieu Parish police jurors on Tuesday approved a resolution supporting the parish’s participation in a group that local officials recently organized to prepare for the challenges that may come with anticipated industrial projects like the Sasol expansion in Westlake.

The Southwest Louisiana Task Force for Growth and Opportunity, or GO Group, is made up of a steering committee led by the Police Jury. It includes several municipalities within Calcasieu Parish, along with the Sheriff’s Office, the School Board, the Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance, the Port of Lake Charles and other organizations. District 14 Police Juror Hal McMillin is the committee chairman.

The steering committee will appoint 10 subcommittees to analyze how the projects will affect areas like workforce development, education, transportation and housing.

Parish Administrator Bryan Beam said the GO Group will take a “unified approach” in coming up with ways to handle a growing population and increased demand for services.

“This is a very good set of problems to have,” Beam said.

The group is expected to meet March 6.

Police Jurors also approved a resolution supporting the effort by San Diego-based Sempra Energy to build liquefied natural gas and export facilities at the company’s Cameron LNG terminal in Hackberry.

The resolution will be forwarded to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the state Department of Environmental Quality, the Louisiana congressional delegation and the state legislative delegation.

Police jurors also approved a bid of $2.54 million by R.E. Heidt Construction Co. Inc. to overlay 43 roads within Wards 1 and 8. Parish Engineer Tim Conner said the work could start in about two months.
