The Calcasieu Parish Public Transit System appears headed to join the Lake Charles transit system at its new location at the corner of Ryan and Clarence streets.

At its meeting Thursday, the Police Jury passed a resolution in support of the move.

The resolution enables the city to move forward completing the second floor of the Lake Charles Transit Center, where the parish will reside, said Tarek Polite, the parish’s director of human services.

“One of the benefits is that it will enable us to work closer with the city of Lake Charles so that we can improve the services of both programs,” he said.

The parish transit system now shares space with Calcasieu Parish’s Workforce Investment Act Program.

Workforce Investment uses 90 percent of the Third Street building, Polite said.

The parish will lease space from the city for $35,000 per year, to be paid through state grants, Polite said.

The Police Jury also elected officials. Shannon Spell replaced outgoing president Les Farnum, and James Mayo replaced outgoing vice president Dennis Scott.

Both were voted in unanimously by their fellow police jurors.

Spell is in his second term as District 1 police juror. Mayo is in his first term as District 2 police juror.
