Houston-based Omega Protein Corporation, a nutrition business and producer of omega-3 fish oil, announced Wednesday they will close its plant located in Cameron parish.

Company officials have not confirmed the number of layoffs.

Parish administrator Tina Horn told the American Press the news is a big blow to the parish and its employees, particularly “with it being Christmas time.”

Company officials are meeting with parish officials this afternoon to discuss details of the closure.

“We’re trying to create jobs in Cameron parish, especially after the two hurricanes,” Horn said. “This is not a good thing. I’m very disappointed.”
