Officer cleared of wrongdoing in fatal shooting of dog

An internal investigation by the Lake Charles Police Department found no wrongdoing by an officer who shot a dog on July 2 while pursuing three carjacking suspects, the department announced Tuesday.

The investigation found the police officer “did not violate any police department policies, state or federal laws,” according to a news release from Sgt. Jeff Keenum.

Because no wrongdoing was found, the officer will not be punished, Keenum said.

Several blocks into the chase, the officer “found himself under the attack of two dogs who had escaped their backyard through an open gate,” Keenum said.

One of the dogs “placed its open mouth on the officers' leg,” at which point he shot the dog to prevent it from biting him, Keenum said.

At that point, the second dog also stopped chasing the officer, Keenum said.

“Without the benefit of time,” the officer wasn’t able to switch to a less-than-lethal weapon, Keenum said.

Keenum said the investigation used testimony from both law enforcement and civilians.

Title: I agree Marc, common sense and reality

We have seemed to get away from reality and common sense alot these days, glad to see. It says the family will look into their next step. If they are talking about suing then I'm gambling in Vegas my life savings they get not even two pennies to rub together because it's frivilous. Amazing how people unrelated to anything going on gave the same statements that the officers did, yet there is only ONE different version someone with something to gain from the loss. It just drops my jaw how folks will not hold a criminal responsible for anything, it's always everyone elses fault. Why are they not up in arms over the felons who let their dogs out to chase the cops? My guess is the criminals are not the easy target and don't have anything to give up ($$$$).

Title: Good Job Officer

It's nice to see common sense prevail. Who in his or her right mind would not have done the same during a dog attack. I know I would have. Thanks again for the great job all of our local Law Enforcement do for us each and every day and night.
