OBERLIN — An Oberlin man is facing a second-degree murder charge after police say he allegedly shot his best friend.
David Bourge, 48, was arrested Sunday in connection with the shooting death of Michael Pitre, 48, also of Oberlin.
Pitre was found by his brother slumped over in the passenger seat of a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Criminal Deputy Ricky Johnson.
Pitre was taken to an Alexandria hospital where he later died from his injuries, Johnson said.
Bourge is being held for observation in a Lafayette hospital with a minor head injury, he said.
“From what his family has told us Bourque and Pitre were best friends,” Johnson said. “We don’t know what happened.”
Authorities received a 911 call reporting a shooting on West Tenth Street on the northside of Oberlin around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
“Upon arrival the Oberlin police officers observed Bourque standing by the rear of a truck parked in the middle of the road with a weapon,” Johnson said.
Bourque allegedly pointed the weapon at officers, then held the gun to his head. Officers heard a snap, but said the gun did not go off, Johnson said.
Bourque then attempted to flee the scene, but was tackled by officers and taken into custody, he said.
The murder is the sixth murder in Allen Parish since last April and the third for the parish this year.
