A 78-year-old Oberlin man died Wednesday morning after crashing his vehicle while driving on US 165 near Kinder, state police said.

Sgt. James Anderson said John D. Manuel was not wearing his seat belt when his 2004 Ford Crown Victoria struck trees on the side of the road.

"Manuel was as the Allen Parish Constable but was on-duty at the time of the crash," Anderson said in a news release. "A routine toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation."

Anderson said the majority of fatal and serious injury crashes involve occupants who are not wearing seat belts.
