A man accused of rape was ordered immediately released Friday when prosecutors announced their intentions to drop charges against him.

Prosecutor Bobby Holmes said charges were being dropped because of “insufficient evidence.”

Christopher Roshell, now 17, was 16 years old when he was accused of rape in March 2012. He was charged with aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and armed robbery.

Holmes said it was “still an open case,” but that in order to protect the time limit in which prosecutors can bring the case to trial, the charges were dropped.

Valetta Roshell brought clothes for her son to change into. “I’m just grateful,” she said. “I thank God for what has occurred.”

Judge Ron Ware ordered Roshell to return to the Calcasieu Correctional Center on Friday afternoon to process out. He was being held there on $25,000 bond.

Public defender Necole Williams declined to comment.””
