Sulphur starting up a Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission

Sulphur Mayor Chris Duncan is seeking 20 local youths to join the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission.
The commission will advise the mayor of issues and concerns facing the youth in the community, and members will serve as city ambassadors to local youth at community events, Duncan said.
Membership is open to youths age 16 or older who attend Sulphur High School, McNeese State University or a local trade school and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.
Duncan said students chosen to participate must agree to a one-year commitment but cannot serve more than two years on the council.
He said the perks of being on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission include an official city of Sulphur badge, city shirts and field trips.
“It’s been very successful in the past,” he said. “We have taken groups to the recycling facility in Houston and to various other places.”
Youths on the commission will also be “key players” in upcoming city events, he said.
Duncan said the commission is formed annually, but that this is the first year that he is marketing it “heavily.”
“In past years I hand-picked a few students by going through the school,” he said. “This year we wanted to grow the program and get more students involved.”
The deadline to apply for the commission is Oct. 10.
Applications can be found on the city’s website, Sulphur.org, and dropped off at City Hall, 101 N. Huntington St.
