Sulphur Centennial Celebration’s four days of activities starts Thursday

SULPHUR — The city of Sulphur will kick off its Centennial Celebration on Thursday, March 13, with four days of activities and events. Mayor Chris Duncan said the entire community is invited to attend.
“Our motto is ‘Faith, Family and Community,’ ” Duncan said. “You only turn 100 years old once. This highlights the history of Sulphur and shows the importance of the last 100 years. It’s bringing our families together.”
Duncan said the celebration will kick off at 5:30 p.m. Thursday with an opening ceremony at the West-Cal Arena. Immediately afterward will be the Old Timey and Family Fun Rodeo, he said.
Friday’s schedule includes the unveiling of the city’s permanent display at the Brimstone Museum at 10 a.m. and the centennial parade at 6 p.m. Duncan said that once the parade ends, country music artist John Michael Montgomery will perform in Heritage Square.
Saturday will include concerts from local artists, displays, a kids zone and demonstrations such as traditional soap making and cooking. The day will end with the rock band Smash Mouth performing. The celebration will continue Sunday with more music, displays and booths. Duncan said all concerts and events are free. “The only things that cost money are the carnival rides and food,” he said.
Duncan said the celebration wouldn’t have been possible without help from the community and the planning committee. “This was not done by only us here at City Hall. It was a community effort,” he said.
April 17 is the official date of Sulphur’s centennial, but because of the Easter holiday and other local festivals, the city decided to host its celebration this weekend, Duncan said.
