The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and state police held roll call for fallen officers Tuesday morning.

Officers killed in the line of duty in 2012 were honored, including Deputy Randy Benoit, as were officers killed in the line of duty in years past.

Benoit, 41, was killed in a car accident in January 2012.

The ceremony was part of National Police Week, which is “about recognizing those officers that have made the ultimate sacrifice,” Chris Guillory, Troop D commander, said.

Calcasieu Sheriff Tony Mancuso read the names of all the officers who have been killed in the line of duty in Southwest Louisiana.

“Today, we honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice; we honor their families, who have endured so much and bear the greatest loss,” Mancuso said. “Their names and sacrifices will always be remembered throughout our ranks.”

The sheriff told the numerous officers in attendance at the Sheriff’s Office that the fallen began their careers with a call to duty and sacrificed their lives for a purpose greater than themselves.

“Let’s now continue that journey to serve with pride and honor as they would have done for us,” he said. “To have known these true heroes, who I have served alongside many of, it only reminds me that when one of ours falls, we all hurt and we all suffer.”

Guillory said that about 500 officers have been killed in the line of duty in Louisiana.

Since 1814, 25 officers have been killed in the line of duty in Southwest Louisiana.

According to numbers released by the FBI this week, 92 officers were killed in the line of duty nationwide this year — 47 of them as a result of criminal acts.

Mancuso admonished the officers in attendance to serve with the same compassion that Benoit did.

“He was known by many of you here today and as we remember him and honor his name and service we continue to be strong in serving his honor,” Mancuso said.
