WELSH — The search continued Thursday for a man who escaped from authorities at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday as he was being booked into the Welsh jail.

Damien Guidry, 33, was initially picked up by police after officers saw him at a store, ran his name in a national crime database and learned he was wanted on a federal firearms charge, said Police Chief Marcus Crochet. He escaped shortly afterward.

“He was in handcuffs, and the officer had just taken them off to get him to sign for his property and escort him to jail,” Crochet said. “When the officer turned his back, he ran.”
