Rosita’s in Sulphur is crowd pleaser

With two kids, a wife, mother-in-law and niece along for the ride, deciding on a place to eat can sometimes be trying.
Pleasing everyone is never really an option and each of us is picky enough to rule out most places.
So I was surprised, and a little apprehensive, when everyone agreed to go to Rosita’s Mexican Restaurant in Sulphur.
Rosita’s, which opened last year, is located in an old building at the corner of US 90 and Post Oak Road.
Though the facility is old, it is well kept and clean. The decorations are standard fair for a Mexican restaurant but it is the food that stands out.
Rosita’s is as authentic a Mexican restaurant as we have in the Lake Area. While it is not Tex Mex, there are enough safe options on the impressive menu for less-than-adventurous eaters.
The wait staff was also exceptional. We were seated within 2 minutes of walking in the door and our waitress was helpful with ordering and available throughout our meal.
The chips and salsa came out right away and were a real treat. The tortilla chips were fresh, warm and crispy. The salsa was, by far, the best I have ever tasted. It was chunky and full of flavor without being too spicy. Rosita’s also has a green chili dip that has quite a kick.
We added two large bowls of queso dip to our order. It was a good thing, too, as I had to fight the kids to get a chip in edge wise.
I ordered the parrillada flameada.
The dish, which goes for $15.99, cannot be found on the menu. It was listed on the white board at the front of the restaurant along with the other specials of the day.
The parrillada flameada is a mix of beef and chicken fajita meat and Mexican sausage covered in cheese. You get a huge pile of flour or corn tortillas, along with grilled onions and peppers, beans, rice and guacamole, to make your own wraps.
I was able to make two meals out of it despite my best effort to finish it all at the restaurant.
It was the best fajita meat I have ever had and the Mexican sausage was great, too. While I am not a fan of guacamole I could tell it did not come out of a can.
Everything in my meal was perfectly cooked and well seasoned without being too spicy. The kitchen staff at Rosita’s seems to understand that a dish doesn’t have to scorch your taste buds to be good.
My wife and mother-in-law ordered off the white board and chose the stuffed avocado.
The avocado, which was about the size of a man’s fist, was cored, stuffed with meat, breaded and then fried.
Both said it was great.
My son ordered two plain tacos with meat and cheese only while my daughter picked the fried chicken tenders from the kids’ menu.
Other kids’ menu items included enchiladas, nachos, quesadillas and burritos. All come in at under $4, except for the chicken tenders.
I assume from the fact that neither had leftovers, they had no problem with their food.
My son added a fruit punch Joya to go with his meal. The drink, made in Mexico by Coca-Cola, was $2.50. I took a sip and it was way too sweet for me but he said it was great and finished it long before his meal came out.
My niece, who was feeling a little under the weather, went with a large bowl of vegetable beef soup.
She didn’t eat much but the soup was good, if not a little salty. It was a little strange with large chunks of meat, cucumbers, carrots, corn and potato.
No one had room for dessert so we skipped it. But Rosita’s has a nice assortment of Mexican candies available for purchase.
The bill was $81.74, well over the $50 we normally shoot for in these reviews. The total comes to about $13 per person, which is a real steal when you consider the quality and amount of food we received.
I would suggest Rosita’s to anyone looking for some great Mexican cuisine.
I plan to make as many return trips as my family will allow. Next time, I will try one of their breakfast dishes.
There are 23 items on the breakfast menu — everything from eggs with cheese, beans and tortillas for $3.99 to eggs with dried beef, onions, tomatoes and serrano peppers for $7.50.
You can get it anytime, but there is a $1 surcharge for a breakfast ordered after noon.
