Kingsley gem lifts Cowboys to series win over ORU

TULSA, Okla. — Freshman pitcher Bryce Kingsley’s eight shutout innings helped lead McNeese to a 5-1 win over Oral Roberts on Sunday to take the Southland Conference series.

The win gives the Cowboys (22-27, 9-15 SLC) a one-game lead over Nicholls for eighth place in the league standings. Oral Roberts drops to 21-28 overall and 14-10 in conference.

Kingsley (7-5) picked up the victory, allowing just four hits and no runs. The shutout was the second of Kingsley’s collegiate career. ORU starting pitcher Tim Zufall (5-2) was charged with the loss, He tossed six innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits.

McNeese left fielder Jackson Gooch went 3-for-5 scoring two runs to lead the Cowboys’ offense while catcher Cameron Toole drove in two runs. Shortstop Connor Lloyd and second baseman Hans Ask RBIs.

The Cowboys took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Toole drove in Gooch and third baseman Tyler Kloser on a single to left-center. They tacked on three more in the seventh inning, getting RBIs from Lloyd, who was hit by a pitch to send in designated hitter Michael Sullivan, while Gooch scored on a fielder’s choice play. Right fielder Lucas Quary scored on a wild pitch to give the Cowboys a 5-0 lead.

Quary moved from right fielder to pitcher for the final inning facing four batters and gave up a run on one hit, a solo homer by the Golden Eagles’ Tyler Boss, for ORU’s lone run.

The Cowboys return to conference action as they host Southeastern Louisiana in the final weekend series of conference play. Game one is set to begin Thursday at 6:30 p.m.””msu-logo-11-27-13
