CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The McNeese State baseball team continued its recent struggles Saturday.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beat the Cowboys 3-1 in the second game of a three-game weekend series. They lost the opener Friday night, 4-0.

The Cowboys (20-24, 7-13 Southland) have managed one run and committed four errors in the first two games of the series. They look to avoid the sweep today with a 1 p.m. game.

However, the Cowboys remain one game ahead of Nicholls State in the race for the eighth and final spot in the SLC tournament with seven games to play. Nicholls blew an 8-4 lead at Sam Houston Saturday but owns the tiebreaker having swept the Cowboys.

Since finishing off a sweep of Northwestern State on March 30, McNeese is 3-15 overall and 2-13 in SLC play. Saturday was the team’s 11th loss in 12 outings.

The Islanders improved to 27-10, 12-8.

TAMU-CC starting pitcher Trevor Belicek (8-1) picked up the win after pitching seven innings, allowing one run while scattering nine hits. Not one Cowboy had more than one hit. Michael Sullivan drove in the Cowboys’ lone run, Reed Gordy, who hit a first-inning triple.

Freshman Bryce Kingsley (6-5) was charged with the loss after going eight innings and allowing one earned run on nine hits and striking out two.””msu-logo-11-27-13
