After a frustrating season that was followed by an agonizing wait, Malcolm Bronson’s football career is finally moving forward.

One of the most decorated defensive backs in McNeese State history, Bronson officially started his professional career on Wednesday by signing a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

A three-time all-Southland Conference selection, Bronson’s senior season was cut short by a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered at Weber State on Sept. 15, the third week of the season.

Bronson’s rehab process wasn’t complete in time for McNeese’s pro day and he was passed over in April’s NFL draft as well as the initial wave of rookie free-agent signings that occurred the day after the draft’s completion.

A month after most other rookies learned where they will be spending training camp, the Chiefs became the team to end Bronson’s wait.

“We couldn’t be more excited for Malcolm. He had a great career here,” said McNeese head coach Matt Viator. “I’ve admired how he’s worked through the injury. We’re extremely happy for him. I hope he makes a full recovery. I’m excited about his chances once he gets healthy.”

Bronson finished his McNeese career with 230 tackles (159 solo), 10 interceptions and three forced fumbles in 40 games.

If Bronson is able to make it back on the field by Kansas City’s preseason opener, area fans won’t have to wait long to see him. The Chiefs play the Saints in the Superdome on Aug. 9.

The Chiefs signed veteran free-agent safety Quintin Demps along with Bronson while releasing defensive backs James Rogers and Justin Glenn.
