DERIDDER — Beauregard Parish police jurors plan to admonish water districts that begin construction projects without warning parish officials and fail to clean up once the work is done.

A letter drafted Tuesday by the panel’s legislative committee says water districts must get a permit from the Police Jury before beginning any work on parish roads or rights of way. It also says the parish will require boring instead of cutting in projects involving paved roads.

No new water lines will be allowed to run parallel to paved roads or shoulders.

“They’ve been doing what they please and not notifying the Police Jury,” said committee Chairman Gerald McLeod. “It’s time to put our foot down.”

According to the letter, water district crews have cut open paved roads, blocked ditches, and prevented the parish from properly maintaining roads by placing water lines or valves in some areas.

McLeod said the majority of the problem lies in the eastern part of the parish. An wordinance requiring water districts to get a permit before beginning construction will likely be discussed at next week’s meeting.Every day
