DERIDDER — The Beauregard Parish 100th Year Celebration will be 3-11 p.m. Saturday, July 27, in the parish fairgrounds exhibition hall, on U.S. 171 North

Local historian Velmer Smith will give a presentation on Beauregard Parish and will be accompanied by fiddle players Ron Yule and Emily Young Doucet and mandolin players Clifford and Sue Blackmon and Thomas Townsley. Guest speaker will be Col. Bret Van Camp, commander of Fort Polk’s 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.

Parish history books will be sold, along with commemorative T-shirts and caps. There will water slides, face painting, a scavenger hunt, sack races and train rides. There will also be a barbecue cookoff, gospel music, and a car and motorcycle show.

A fireworks display will be at 9 p.m.

Beauregard Parish, named after Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard, was carved from Calcasieu Parish in 1912 and became its own entity in 1913. Most notable in the parish’s history is that women were given the right to vote in 1915; women in the rest of country got voting rights in 1920.
