Bearkats edge Cowgirls in extra innings

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — McNeese dropped the final game of its Southland Conference softball series Sunday in extra innings, losing 4-3 to Sam Houston State in eight innings.

Sam Houston State took a 2-0 lead in the third inning before McNeese (36-13, 17-5 SLC) scored a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1. Ashley Modzelewski led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Pinch runner Brittany Calbert advanced to third on a Marissa Koetting ground out and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Goree. Sam Houston responded with solo home run in the bottom of the inning to take back the two-run advantage

McNeese tied the game at 3-all in the top of the seventh with two runs, led by Emily Vincent’s RBI single to left field which scored pinch runner Megan Knippa. Modzelewski’s single scored Alanna DiVittorio to tie the game, but left the bases loaded with one out.

Sam Houston State had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh but also left the bases loaded.

Modzelewski led McNeese for the second time in the series. going 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Lauren Langner was 2-for-3 and Fontenot was 2-for-4.

Jamie Allred (17-5) earned the loss. She gave up 12 hits, struck out three and walked two in the complete game.

The Cowgirls conclude the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Nicholls.””
