Early voting for the May 4 election will run April 20-27 at voter registrar offices in Allen, Calcasieu and Cameron parishes.

There are no elections in Beauregard, Jeff Davis or Vernon parishes.

Voters can cast ballots 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. daily except Sunday.

In Calcasieu Parish, voting will be held at the parish courthouse, 1000 Ryan St.; West Calcasieu Business Center, 500 N. Huntington St. in Sulphur; and the Moss Bluff Library, 261 Parish Road.

In Cameron Parish, residents can vote at 148 Smith Circle West Annex, next to the parish courthouse in Cameron.

Voters should bring a driver’s license, Louisiana special ID or some other generally recognized picture ID.

The local ballot items:

Allen Parish

• The Allen Parish Police Jury is seeking a parishwide proposition to provide an additional homestead exemption for certain disabled veterans and surviving spouses.

• The Police Jury is also seeking a 15-year, 0.70 percent sales tax for solid waste collection and disposal, including acquisition of land for container sites. The tax would generate $1.6 million a year.

• The Allen Parish School Board is seeking a 10-year, 7.5-mill tax to provide school resource officers in all 11 parish schools. The millage, which is expected to generate about $630,000 a year, would be paid by property owners not covered by homestead exemption. It would be used to hire, train and equip the officers and to install surveillance cameras and other safety upgrades in schools.

• Voters in Fire Protection District 1 near the Elton area are being asked to approve a 10-year, 6.3-mill tax. The measure represents a 1.03 percent increase over the 5.27 mills approved by voters in 2002. It generates $18,650 a year for district maintenance, improvement and operation.

• Voters in Ward 1 in the Oberlin area will decide a runoff for justice of the peace between Ricky Mahaffey and Stephen B. Manuel.

Calcasieu Parish

• Voters in Lake Charles City Council District A will decide a runoff between Mary Morris and incumbent Marshal Simien Jr.

• Voters in Vinton will decide a runoff for police chief between incumbent Ricky Fox and Arthur Phillips Sr.

Cameron Parish

• The Cameron Parish Police Jury is seeking renewal of a 10-year, 2.64-mill tax for maintenance and operation of the parish courthouse and jail. The tax is expected to generate $739,631 a year.

• The Police Jury is seeking renewal of 10-year, 6.61-mill tax for road and bridge maintenance. The tax would generate $1.8 million annually.

• The Police Jury is seeking renewal of a 10-year, 1.32-mill tax to support the Health Center. It would generate $369,815 a year.

• The Cameron Parish School Board is seeking continuance of a 10-year, 8.5-mill tax for school maintenance and operation. It would generate $2.2 million a year.

• The School Board is also seeking continuance of 10-year, 6-mill tax for maintenance and improvement of schoolhouses and the school system. It is expected to generate $1.5 million a year.
