Musician and storyteller Mike Anderson — known for playing a variety of instruments — will perform at 10 a.m. in the DeQuincy Library, 2:30 p.m. in the Starks Library on Monday and at 11:30 a.m. in Lake Charles’ Central Library and 3 p.m. in Hayes Library Tuesday.

“I got into these unique instruments because I just started picking them up and trying them out,” he said.

“At this show I’ll be playing instruments that most people don’t know about such as the bones, which are literally a pair of cow bones; a world-class instrument, the jaw harp; as well as displaying and playing several nose flutes from around the world.”

Anderson said his show has just as large an emphasis on storytelling and humor as it does music. “The show isn’t just music or just stories,” he said. “It’s both, with the music creeping into the stories and the stories finding their way into the music.”

Anderson’s music has been recorded for albums, including “In Came That Rooster” and “The Cat Came Back,” and his stories have been published under the titles “Riding Trees, Denny and I,” “Samuel and the Butterflies” and “The Big Hairy Spider.”

Having performed for nearly 40 years, Anderson said he’s thrilled to be able to share his talents with audiences of all ages at libraries across America, especially considering the plight of many traveling musicians.

“For the next couple of months I’ll mainly be performing in summer reading programs at libraries across multiple states,” he said.

“I’m lucky because several of my musician buddies play with bands in bars and go to work at three in the afternoon and don’t finish until three in the morning. I get to play in clean, air-conditioned libraries and am usually back in my hotel room by four in the afternoon.

“I’m very lucky to do what I do.”
