SULPHUR — Neithan Allen knocked six more strokes off par on Sunday and won the Sulphur city golf championship going away.

His final total was a tournament record 196 after a second straight six-under par 65. He had opened with a five-under 66 on Friday and took taking a 12-shot lead into the finale.

Allen, who grew up in central Louisiana and played golf at Grant High School, won the tournament by 14 shots as former champion Philip Hoffpauir placed second with 210 after a 67 on Sunday.

Hoffpauir had matched Allen stroke for stroke on the front nine on Sunday, both shooting 32, and had even birdied three of the first five holes on the back side but he bogeyed both 17 and 18 for a 35.

Rounding out the top five were Chris Vallette at 216 (72-73-71) and Sutton Farmer (69-76-72) and Chad Johnson (71-73-73) both at 217.

Defending champion John Morrissey, who had opened the tournament with a two-under 69, came in with a 79 on Sunday, finished at 222 and in a tie for sixth place with Gabe Coleman who was the only other player to go under par on Sunday with a 70.

Allen’s golf on the final day was almost picture perfect although he did admit that he wasn’t satisfied with his drives on Nos. 14 and 15, both par fives.

“Other than that I didn’t miss a shot I tried to hit,” he said.

The 30 year old managed to make a par on the 14th and after his tee shot on 15 found cover to the right of the fairway He knocked his second shot under limbs towards the green, placed his chip to within two and a half feet and made the birdie.

On the par 16 he knocked in a 25 foot birdie putt and then wrapped it up with pars on both 17 and 18.

“I can’t be any happier,” Allen said. “I was hoping to be able to put three solid rounds up without give anything back.”

Even though he entered the final day with that double figure lead, he said that his goal had been to play the shot that was needed.

After going three under on the front side which included a birdie on No. 4 and an eagle on No. 8 (three wood, six iron and three foot putt), he was also thinking about at least tying the one day tournament record of 64. He even drove No. 10 but then three putted.

Allen birdied 12, 15 and 16 but came up one shot short of the single round record.

A year ago Allen had placed fourth in the tournament.

Other flight results on Sunday had Cody LeBlanc taking the first flight by two shots with 75-77—152 while Mike Beglis won the second flight title with 158 (79-79) and Art Scarborough claimed the third flight with 171 (83-88).
