Calcasieu Parish welcomed its first baby born in 2014 Wednesday morning with the birth of Aiden Ien Robinson.
Aiden was born at 8:04 a.m. at Women & Children’s Hospital in Lake Charles, weighing in at 6 pounds, 9 ounces. He is the third child of Stephen and Valerie Robinson, who also have two sons — 9-year-old Tajae and 3-year-old Josiah.
“This is quite an experience,” said Valerie Robinson. “I was not expecting to have the baby on New Year’s Day. I was just going to go home and wait the contractions out. I had a doctor’s appointment tomorrow, but I don’t think I’m going to need it now.”
Stephen Robinson said he and his wife left their home for the hospital at the stroke of midnight Jan. 1, but neither of them expected to be leaving in the morning with a son. “We asked if we were going to be able to go home today and the nurse said, ‘Yes, but you’re probably going to be taking a baby home in your arms instead of in a belly.’”
Aiden was delivered on time and was the first of two children born at Women & Children’s Hospital on New Year’s Day. This is the second year in a row Women & Children’s has delivered the parish’s first baby of the year. The hospital delivers between 100 and 130 babies each month, said Lisa Guerrero, marketing manager at Women & Children’s Hospital.
Valerie Robinson said having Aiden on New Year’s Day made the momentous occasion all the more special.
“We’re ecstatic,” she added. “This is the best new year’s present anyone could get. I want the best for Aiden. That’s all any parent can want for their child.”
Originally from Mobile, Ala., the Robinsons moved to Lake Charles two years ago. Stephen Robinson works in aviation maintenance and Valerie is a document control clerk with CB&I in Lake Charles.
