The votes are in and the winner of the People’s Choice Overture is “Capricco Espagnol” by Rimsky-Korsakov. Conductor Bohuslav Rattay decided to allow the audience to have a hand in selecting the opening piece for the Lake Charles Symphony’s Feb. 2 concert.

Votes were cast at earlier symphony events, including the September concert, the Discovery Series, Art Promenade and the Holiday Gala.

“Capricco Espagnol,” with its lively melodies based on Spanish folk tunes, emerged as the clear favorite. The Haydn Trumpet Concerto, showcasing one of the symphony’s own, David Scott, and the popular Symphony No. 2 by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius round out the Feb. 2 program.
