A Mermentau man died Wednesday night when the vehicle he was driving ran off the road and hit a tree on U.S. 90 just west of La. 91 in Acadia Parish, authorities said.

Christopher Legros, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office, state police said Thursday in a news release.

Legros was not wearing a seat belt, according to investigators.

A passenger in the vehicle, Mariah Davis, 19, of Jennings, was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries. She was wearing a seat belt, police said.

Authorities said Legros was driving fast when the vehicle veered off the left side of the highway and struck a tree at about 6:50 p.m.

Routine toxicology tests are pending, police said.
