More than a decade later, McNeese State is making a return trip to Nebraska.

The Cowboys will play the Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. on Sept. 6, 2014, the second week of that college football season. McNeese’s payout for the game is $415,000.

McNeese visited Nebraska in 2002, losing 38-14 in a game the Huskers didn’t put away until the fourth quarter. Nebraska fans gave McNeese players a standing ovation as they left the field.

That experience ended up playing a role in going back to Lincoln, said McNeese athletic director Tommy McClelland.

“Our fans always talk about how nice everyone associated with the Nebraska football program was the last time we played there,” McClelland said. “When you have good experiences like that, you try and schedule those teams again.”

The game will mark the first time McNeese has ever played a Big Ten opponent. Nebraska was in the Big 12 the last time the teams met.

McNeese is also scheduled to host traditional FCS power Appalachian State in 2014. The Cowboys are still looking for a season-opening opponent for that season, which McClelland said will either be another FCS program or a Division II school.

The FCS regular season will have 12 games in 2013 and 2014. McNeese opens next season at FBS South Florida, but McClelland said there are still two more games to fill. He said McNeese will have six home games next year.
