McNeese State didn’t have to look far to replace sports information director Louis Bonnette, who is retiring after 46 years of service to the school.
And they’ve probably found the one person perfectly comfortable with the football field being named for his predecessor.
Athletic director Tommy McClelland announced on Monday that Bonnette’s son Matthew will take over as McNeese’s SID starting July 1.
Matthew Bonnette has served as the associate sports information director at Northwestern State for the last nine years.
“We are so excited to have Matthew join our team,” McClelland said in a school release. “He not only brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, but he also understands how to effectively communicate an athletics department’s message. I have watched Matthew from a distance over the past several years at Northwestern State and I have been very impressed with his abilities.”
Matthew Bonnette is a 2002 graduate of McNeese, where he worked for his father as a student assistant. He then spent two years as the SID at Division II Henderson State before moving on to Northwestern State. He has served as a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America selection committee the last three years.
While his working relationship with the outgoing SID doesn’t hurt, Bonnette has also made a name on his own, winning 11 awards from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for his work over the years.
