Marcantel elected Lake Arthur police chief

Ray Marcantel unseated Lake Arthur Police Chief Cheryl Vincent in Saturday’s runoff elections.

Marcantel won by a vote of 434-399, or by 52 percent, with 46 percent voter turnout, according to complete but unofficial returns from the secretary of state.

In the Lake Arthur town council race, voters re-elected David Hanks with 409 votes and Sherry Hymel Crochet with 425 votes. Voters also elected Eric S. Turner with 443 votes and Robert “Bobby” Palermo with 374 votes. Other candidates were Kathy Benoit with 371 votes; Burnell Broussard with 367 votes; Vicki Broussard with 330 votes; and Auldon Robinson Sr. with 304 votes.

Elton Police Chief Bruce Lemelle won re-election against Marcus Lemoine Sr. by a vote of 28-230, or by 55 percent, with 61 percent voter turnout. Also in Elton, incumbent Shirley Lafleur Johnson won re-election over opponent Marilyn Broussard Granger with a vote of 247-246, with 59 percent voter turnout.

In a runoff election for constable, justice of the peace Ward 4, Rita Y. Ramagos won re-election over Brian “Ping” Vanicor, 571-551, or by 51 percent, with 36 percent voter turnout.

Parishwide, voters renewed a 10-year, 2.61-mill tax for maintenance and upkeep of the parish courthouse and jail — 4,149-3,241, or by 56 percent, with 35 percent voter turnout. It will generate $503,914 a year.

Voters in the Elton area renewed a 10-year, 5.53-mill tax for Fire District 6 by a vote of 423-203, or by 68 percent, with 45 percent voter turnout. The money will be used for operations and maintenance. The tax will generate $55,115 annually.

Voters in the Fenton area renewed a 10-year, 10.32-mill tax for Road District 11’s Sub-Road District 1 for road and bridge maintenance and improvement by a 293-168 vote, or 64 percent, with 36 percent voter turnout. It will bring in $224,389 a year.

In the U.S. Senate race, voters favored Bill Cassidy, with 5,781 votes, or 71 percent, over incumbent Mary Landrieu, who got 2,359 votes. Voter turnout was 39 percent.(MGNonline)
