Two year’s after her death, Mary “Jeanette” Duhon’s suspected killer is still a ghost.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso said authorities believe they have been close to Joe Constance a couple times, but he is still on the run.

“I really do feel that we’re going to get him,” Mancuso said. “I feel confident that he’s going to surface. He basically just vanished and when I say that, I literally mean that because he obviously had a very, very well-executed plan or he definitely had somebody helping him.”

Joe Matthew Constance, 45, lived at 167 Eric Road when he entered 9258 Rustic View Drive at about 7:30 a.m. June 5, 2011, a Sunday, and shot and killed Duhon, 49, his estranged wife. Duhon and Constance were divorcing and she had a protective order against him.

Constance’s red Dodge pickup truck was found at about 8 a.m. on Fred Vail Road, 4 1/2 miles away from Rustic View Drive. He was not there, although he left his dog with the truck, along with the vehicle’s keys, his cellphone, his wallet and identification.

“We were on him within 30 minutes of the killing and he was just gone,” Mancuso said. “Our first reaction was that he killed himself in the woods.”A three-day manhunt followed, as authorities searched a three-mile grid in the remote area.

Mancuso said Constance may have used waterways to escape or may have had help. Either one is a “possibility,” he said. Mancuso said the Sheriff’s Office continues to work the case, along with the U.S. Marshals Service.

“I just think it’s a matter of time and he’ll surface and we’ll bring this finally to an end,” Mancuso said. “We haven’t given up. We talk out about it pretty often, and we get reports pretty often from possible sightings and things in other parts of the country.”

Mancuso said anyone who knows Constance’s whereabouts may contact the Sheriff’s Office or U.S. marshals. He cautioned against anyone aiding Constance.

Mancuso said the only similar local case he can remember is the hunt for Jose Manuel Garcia Guevara.

Authorities said Garcia Guevara raped and killed his 26-year-old neighbor, Wanda Barton, in February 2008 in her mobile home. Garcia Guevara reportedly returned to his hometown of Rioverde, San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
