A local attorney was indicted on rape charges Friday in 14th Judicial District Court.

A grand jury returned a true bill of forcible rape against Jonathan Lane Johnson, 32, 1706 Hodges St.

Judge Mike Canaday set bond at $150,000.

Shane Hinch, Johnson’s attorney, said his client planned to surrender himself.

“We’re disappointed in the result of the grand jury — our faith in the system is not shaken. This is not over,” Hinch said. “Our client is innocent as charged; he’s innocent of any crime. We plan to fight this vehemently, zealously and as quickly as possible. This will not be drug out and we will go forward in due haste in requiring the state to prove that he is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Johnson is accused of drugging a 21-year-old woman at a local bar, then taking her home and having sex with her.

The indictment said the alleged rape happened on Oct. 30, 2011.

When Johnson was arrested in December 2011, Louisiana State Police said the woman reported the rape on Nov. 9, 2011.

Johnson was initially charged with simple rape.

Because Johnson is a local attorney, the district attorney’s office recused itself and handed the case over to the state attorney general’s office.

Canaday said the 14th JDC may have to do the same because Johnson was a law clerk there. He said he would recuse himself if the case were allotted to him.

Johnson’s brother, Adam Johnson, also a local attorney, said “my brother is innocent. That’s all there is to it.”
