Leesville has signed off to purchase a plot of land which will become the future fire station, making another step forward in improving infrastructure for a planned development outside Fort Polk’s gates.

The city council unanimously approved a measure to purchase the land from FORESTREE GM for $28,000 on La. Hwy 467 on Monday.  The approval comes just days after $1.8 million in revenue bonds were approved by the state bond commission for the new Leesville fire station and for improvements to the city’s central fire station.

The city also voted to extend its moratorium on all construction along the highway for two more months. The moratorium will bar any building until July 28. Public relations official Tammy Sharp said the moratorium was necessary so that the council could get all zoning in place before construction begins.

The city also voted to enter into an easement agreement in order to continue its work repairing local sewer and water lines.

“Over the course of the years, sewers were sometimes placed without sewer or easement agreements.,” Mayor Robert Rose said during Monday’s meeting. “ In order to repair this house and repair this section of sewer, we need an easement agreement.”(Special to the American Press)
