JENNINGS — The Experimental Aircraft Association has designated May 5 as a national “Learn to Fly Day.”
To celebrate that day, the local EAA Chapter 451 will sponsor the 3rd annual Barnstormer’s Air Festival 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Jennings Airport.
Along with planes, this year’s air festival will include a hot rods and a classic car show.
The EAA Chapter will again sponsor a Young Eagles rally, which allows those ages 8-17 to experience aviation and flying firsthand.
Last year, the EAA Chapter flew 61 Young Eagles.
The experience begins with a pre-flight safety briefing along with a description of the plane’s interior. After the safety briefing and buckling up, they began their cruise down the runway at full throttle. As the wind and wings take control, the ground drops away and a Young Eagle is born.
The Young Eagles program does not end at the wheels touch down. The Next Step program provides a way for Young Eagles to earn their pilot’s license through a free Sporty’s on-line course worth $215.
