MOSS BLUFF — The Sulphur Golden Tors came through when it mattered most Tuesday evening, using a big finish to top the Sam Houston Lady Broncos 36-30 in a crucial District 3-5A clash.

The win keeps the Tors (18-5, 8-0) perfect in district play as they seek to capture the crown for the third consecutive year. The win over Sam Houston on the road was likely the most important win so far.

“Everyone knows that in order to win district you have to win all of your home games and steal as many on the road as you can and we definitely stole this one tonight,” Sulphur head coach Helen LeFevre said. “They beat us in the Westlake Tournament back in November in a high-scoring game so we knew we had to keep the score low tonight. I thought we did a good job of executing our defensive gameplan and this is a huge win for us.”

For the Broncos (22-3, 5-3) the loss puts them in a tough spot in the district race, but not out of it completely.

“(Sulphur) just had more intensity than us at the end of the game,” Sam Houston head coach Jason Jagneaux said. “Hats off to Coach LeFevre, her staff and her kids because they are a great program and they always show up.”

The Tors started things off quickly with six quick points from Kourtney Brooks and Cierra Wilson, leading by as many as seven in the first quarter.

Sam Houston point guard Abby Jolie would close that gap by burying a three-pointer from approximately seven feet behind the line as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, cutting the lead to 9-8.

Marcella Myers drained a long two to start the second quarter, giving the Broncos their first lead of the night.

They would hold that lead for most of the night, not surrendering it until Sulphur point guard Taylee Kuykendall buried a deep three with 3:50 remaining in the game to put the Tors back up 30-27.

“That was a game changer for us,” LeFevre said of the trey. “That was really big and that allowed us to finally take control of the game.”

Kuykendall would finish with a game-high 16 points. Wilson added eight points and 11 rebounds for the Tors.

Miracle Simon led the way for Sam Houston with 12 points while Sam Logan added nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks.””
