Landry calls on Boustany for congressional debate

BATON ROUGE (AP) — U.S. Rep. Jeff Landry is calling on his Republican rival, U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany, to agree to a debate in the 3rd District congressional race before the November election.

The only debate planned between the two GOP congressmen — who were forced into the same district when Louisiana lost a congressional seat — has been canceled after communications problems among the University of Louisiana at Lafayette officials who were hosting the event.

Landry sent a letter to Boustany on Friday challenging him to a debate on or before Nov. 1.

"The people of Acadiana and southwest Louisiana deserve the chance to see both of us explain our positions so they may decide who they want representing them in Washington," Landry wrote.

No word yet from the Boustany campaign on whether Boustany will agree.

Five candidates are seeking the congressional seat. Boustany and Landry have been together for two candidate events, chamber of commerce forums that weren't debate format.

Landry has accused Boustany of dodging a face-to-face debate, a claim the Boustany campaign calls ridiculous.

Title: Libertarian Candidate

Get me in that debate. This isn't two Quarterbacks arguing over who's going to get the ball over the goal line. There are serious issues to debate. It will just be another Dog and Pony show if the other Candidates, including myself, aren't allowed to participate. A one on one Debate between Mr. Boustany and Mr. Landry will no doubt make for some good headlines. But does nothing when it comes to actual serious debating. It's very sad that American Press, and other media outlets are supporting the Campaigns of both of them, and Marginalizing the other Candidates. They weren't always Congressmen, and the rest of us Candidates deserve to treated fairly.
